Virtual routing and forwarding (VRF) groups allow internet service providers (ISPs) and large organizations to organize and track logical network segments, subnets, and VLANs. These groups are useful when managing overlapping IP ranges across different customers or business units. While IP ranges may overlap between different VRF groups, they must remain unique within a single VRF group.
The need for VRF groups arises because there are only three primary IP address ranges dedicated to private network use: 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, and 192.168.0.0/16. Because thousands of end users operate on these identical ranges, VRF groups provide the necessary isolation to route traffic to the internet or other networks without conflict.
By default, most VRF groups cannot route traffic to one another. However, each group can route to a shared network cloud, such as the internet. This structure allows multiple customers to assign IP addresses as needed without interfering with other network segments.
This article explains how to create and manage these groups to track overlapping IP ranges and how to set a default group for autodiscovered subnets.
Prerequisites
You need the following before managing VRF groups:
Add a VRF group
To create a VRF group, follow these steps:
1. Go to IT Asset Management > Inventory > VPCs (VRF Groups) and click Add new.
2. On the Add VPC (VRF Group) page, enter a name for the group in the Name field.
3. (Optional) Enter a description in the Description field.
4. (Optional) Select the Default checkbox to automatically assign all future autodiscovered subnets and IP addresses to this VRF group.
Note: Selecting the Default option only applies to subnets discovered after the setting is enabled. It does not automatically move existing subnets into the VRF group. To associate existing subnets, you must edit the individual subnet records or use a bulk hardware/network update.
5. Complete any additional fields as needed and click Save.
